Description
Quick answer: bristlenose pleco and brushmouth pleco are the same fish, an Ancistrus species sold at 4 to 7 cm. It stays under 13 cm, grazes algae, and is the default pleco recommendation for community tanks because it does not outgrow the tank.
Search volume tells the story. More people look for a bristlenose than for any other pleco, and almost all of them are trying to avoid the mistake of buying a common pleco for a 60 cm tank. That is the entire commercial case: a small pleco that does the job people expect a pleco to do.
Why the name gets confused
Brushmouth describes the rasping mouth, bristlenose describes the soft bristles on a mature male’s snout. Both names point to Ancistrus. Retailers use them interchangeably, and customers search both. We keep the two names together on the page so the fish is found either way.
Identification
Broad head, flattened belly, sucker mouth, and in males, bristles running up the snout. Females usually have far fewer bristles or none. Base colour varies from brown to olive, with pale spots on many lines. Adult size is 10 to 13 cm, which is the number that matters most to a buyer.
Water and setup
23 to 28 degrees Celsius, pH 6.5 to 7.6. They tolerate a range of hardness. Provide a cave, a piece of driftwood and decent filtration. They are territorial with other plecos but peaceful with everything else, which makes them easy to place in a community display.
Diet
Algae is part of the diet, not all of it. Sinking pellets, vegetable matter and occasional protein keep condition. A bristlenose living only on glass algae slowly loses weight, a detail worth passing to the customer at point of sale.
Packing and grading
Fish are graded at 4 to 7 cm. The smaller sizes are juveniles and grow quickly, which is why a retailer can reorder the same line every few weeks. Fish are fasted before dispatch, bagged in oxygen and packed at moderate density because of their waste load.
