This category covers the catfish that do not fit neatly into the corydoras or pleco collections: glass catfish, black and marble lancer catfish, two-spotted catfish and the two Clarias forms. They are bought by retailers serving keepers who want something less ordinary than a bronze cory, and by specialist stores that stock oddball and predator displays.

The group is deliberately varied. A two-spotted catfish at 5 to 7 cm suits a community tank. A marble lancer at 12 to 15 cm needs a large aquarium and tank mates that cannot be swallowed. A glass catfish is sensitive, transparent and sold on curiosity. Grouping them by care would be tidier, but grouping them by what customers search for is more useful.

What to check before ordering

• Adult size, because several of these fish grow well past the size they are sold at.
• Diet and mouth size, because a predatory catfish will eat its tank mates.
• Destination rules, because Clarias species are restricted in several markets including parts of the USA.
