Cold water minnows and ricefish
This is the category for tanks without a heater. White cloud minnows handle room temperature, tolerate a wide pH range and survive the mistakes that new keepers make. Ricefish occupy the surface layer and tolerate water from fresh through to low salinity. Between them they cover the unheated and the specialist surface niche that most shops ignore.
The three varieties here are white cloud, longfin white cloud and Javanese ricefish. The two white clouds are the same species, one with standard fins and one with trailing fins, and they are graded and priced separately because they sell to different customers.
Why this category is worth stocking
- Unheated tanks are a large, underserved retail category.
- White clouds are among the hardiest fish in the trade and rarely come back.
- Ricefish give a shop something to sell to keepers who want the surface layer covered.
Supply
Fish are graded at 2 to 3 cm, fasted before dispatch and packed in oxygen. Small cyprinids travel well, which keeps freight costs reasonable on volume orders. Availability and size mix are confirmed per batch.
Start with the white cloud minnow, longfin white cloud minnow or Javanese ricefish listing.
